RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is an operation designed to improve the size and shape of the nose. It is one of the most difficult cosmetic operations that are commonly performed.

It is also arguably the most under-rated operation in terms of difficulty by many surgeons of different disciplines, however in the correct hands it is also one of the most satisfying. If you are considering having a nasal operation to improve the shape of your nose it is of the utmost importance that you see a fully trained and accredited plastic surgeon.

The usual features of the nose that patients have to be addressed are –

The hump on the top of the nose
A broad or boxy nasal tip
A droopy tip
The length of the nose
The width of the nose
Nasal breathing issues
A crooked septum inside the nose
A scar is needed in order to provide surgical access to the internal structure of the nose. Most of the scarring is inside the nose and the majority will have a small scar under the nose which becomes almost invisible after a short period of time. The operation then plans to remove, reshape and refine both the bony and cartilage of the nose. One of the reasons that rhinoplasty is difficult is because there are factors which are beyond the surgeon’s control. In brief this involves the healing process of the bone and cartilage and this will be explained in more detail during you consultation with your surgeon.
Whilst a natural looking nose is the ultimate goal it is crucial to understand that close friends and family are going to realise that you have had something done. Unlike some plastic surgical procedures you cannot cover up the nose and given that it is the central feature of the face, changing the nose can have a profound effect on the overall appearance of the person. The aim is to have a noticeable result after surgery without having an artificial “operated appearance”.
The operation is performed under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital with most patients staying as an inpatient for 1-2 nights.
