ABDOMINOPLASTY

There is a large degree of abdominal surgeries available which can be tailored to your individual needs. You should think of this surgery as a body contouring procedure rather than a weight loss procedure and you will have to accept a scar. They range from the most radical type of abdominoplasty surgery called a Fleur de Lys to a standard abdominoplasty and to minimal scar options such as liposuction.

The most common procedure we perform is the standard abdominoplasty.

In summary this involves 3 main elements to the surgery:

  • Removal of all of the skin between the belly button and the pubic hair line
  • Tightening of the muscle layer
  • Liposuction to the waist region

The upper abdominal skin is then pulled down and stretched with concomitant tightening of the whole abdomen. The scars will run from the point of the hip on both sides along the bottom of the abdomen so that it may be concealed by underwear. There will also be a small oval scar around the belly button. This surgery aims to tighten abdominal skin and also provide a contour through the waist. Whilst it is not an insignificant scar, there are a number of techniques available to both shorten the scar and manage it’s appearance.

The medicare item numbers apply to women who have a significant split in their abdominal muscles (DRAM – divarication of rectus abdominus muscles) after pregnancy. It can also be performed after weight loss in any patient. In certain circumstances for significant weight loss patients a larger scar may be preferable in the form of a Fleur de Lys abdominoplasty which will have an additional vertical scar in the midline such that the final result is an inverted T.
A mini-abdominoplasty differs from the standard procedure by having a shorter scar and no scar around the belly button.
An apronectomy is reserved for patients who have an ‘apron’ or dewlap which interferes with their life and is a functional operation and not a cosmetic one.
Liposuction involves 2-3 scars to predominantly remove fat from the abdomen or waist.
A general anaesthetic is used for all of these procedures and we only operate in accredited hospitals. All of your stitches will be dissolving.
